Ingredients

Sloppy Joe Mixture

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • ½ cup yellow onion, diced
  • ½ teaspoon Kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons yellow mustard
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

Bread and Toppings

  • 8 slices frozen Texas Toast garlic bread
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Fresh parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a large rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper to prepare for baking the Texas Toast.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until no longer pink, about 4 to 5 minutes. Drain any excess grease to keep the mixture from being too oily.
  3. Sauté Onions: Add the butter, diced yellow onion, salt, and pepper to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for 2 to 3 minutes until the onions soften and become translucent, enhancing the flavor base.
  4. Add Sauce Ingredients: Stir in brown sugar, yellow mustard, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, and Italian seasoning. Cook the mixture for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld.
  5. Toast the Texas Bread: While the sauce cooks, arrange the frozen Texas Toast slices on the prepared baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven for 6 minutes to lightly toast the bread.
  6. Assemble Sloppy Joes: Remove the baking sheet from the oven and evenly spoon the sloppy joe meat mixture over each slice of toasted Texas Toast. Make sure each slice is well-covered for maximum flavor.
  7. Add Cheese and Finish Baking: Sprinkle about 1/8 cup of shredded mozzarella cheese on top of each assembled toast slice. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 3 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese has melted and is bubbly.
  8. Garnish and Serve: Once baked, garnish the sloppy joes with freshly chopped parsley for a pop of color and freshness. Serve immediately while hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add a dash of hot sauce or some crushed red pepper flakes to the sloppy joe mixture.
  • If you prefer a leaner option, use ground turkey or chicken instead of ground beef.
  • Leftover sloppy joe mixture can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • The Texas Toast can be substituted with any thick-cut bread if frozen garlic bread is unavailable.
