Soft, fluffy Texas Roadhouse-style dinner rolls that are slightly sweet and buttery, perfect for pairing with any meal. These homemade rolls feature a tender crumb and golden crust, made from scratch with yeast and baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 ¼ cups warm milk (about 105-110°F)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar

Dough

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, room temperature (½ stick)
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 ½ - 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus more for kneading)

Topping

  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle yeast over the surface. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until the yeast is foamy, indicating it is active.
  2. Mix Dough: Pour the yeast mixture into a large mixing bowl. Add ¼ cup softened butter, egg, kosher salt, and 2 cups of flour. Beat on medium speed until smooth and well combined.
  3. Add Flour Gradually: Slowly add the remaining flour until a soft dough ball forms. Increase mixer speed to medium-high and beat for an additional 2-3 minutes. The dough should be slightly tacky but not sticky; add more flour one tablespoon at a time if needed.
  4. First Rise: Lightly grease a large bowl and place the dough inside, turning once to coat with oil. Cover with a clean dish towel and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 45-60 minutes.
  5. Punch Down and Shape: Punch down the risen dough gently. Lightly flour a work surface and turn the dough out. Knead lightly if necessary, then let it rest for a few minutes.
  6. Prepare Baking Sheet: Prepare baking sheets by lining them with a silicone mat or spraying with non-stick cooking spray.
  7. Roll Out Dough: Roll dough into a 12x8 inch rectangle about ½ inch thick.
  8. Cut Rolls: Using a sharp knife, cut the dough into 24-30 even pieces.
  9. Second Rise: Place rolls on prepared baking sheets. Cover with a dish towel and let them rise in a warm place until almost doubled, about 45-60 minutes.
  10. Preheat Oven: About 20 minutes before rolls have finished rising, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  11. Bake: Bake rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  12. Brush With Butter: Remove rolls from oven and immediately brush the tops with melted butter for a rich, glossy finish.

Notes

  • Ensure milk is warm (105-110°F) to activate yeast properly but not too hot to kill it.
  • If dough is too sticky, add flour gradually—do not over-flour or rolls may become tough.
  • Cover dough with a slightly damp cloth or plastic wrap during rising to prevent drying out.
  • Serve rolls warm for the best taste and texture.
  • Store leftovers tightly wrapped at room temperature for up to 2 days or freeze for longer storage.
