Delightful Strawberry Danish Hearts featuring flaky puff pastry filled with a creamy vanilla-scented cream cheese mixture and fresh strawberries, topped with a sparkling sugar crust. Perfect as a sweet breakfast treat or an elegant dessert.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Pastry

  • 2 sheets puff pastry (thawed)

Toppings & Finishes

  • 1 cup fresh strawberries
  • 1 large egg (beaten)
  • 3 tablespoons Turbinado sugar (or raw sugar)
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup.
  2. Make the cream cheese filling: In a large mixing bowl, use a hand mixer to beat together the room temperature cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and creamy, ensuring no lumps remain.
  3. Prepare puff pastry hearts: Gently unfold the thawed puff pastry sheets and smooth out the creases using a rolling pin. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, cut out ten hearts and transfer them carefully onto the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Fill the pastry hearts: Spoon a dollop of the cream cheese mixture onto each puff pastry heart. Using the back of your spoon or a small spatula, spread the filling into a smaller heart shape, making sure to leave a border around the edges so the filling doesn’t spill out during baking.
  5. Add strawberries: Slice the fresh strawberries and arrange them evenly on top of the cream cheese filling on each heart.
  6. Apply egg wash and sugar topping: Brush the exposed edges of the puff pastry hearts with the beaten egg, which will give them a beautiful golden color during baking. Sprinkle the edges generously with Turbinado or raw sugar to add a sweet, crunchy texture.
  7. Bake and finish: Bake the strawberry Danish hearts in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes or until the puff pastry turns golden brown and crispy. Once baked, remove from the oven and dust lightly with powdered sugar to add a delicate sweetness and pretty finish before serving.

Notes

  • Make sure the cream cheese is at room temperature to achieve a smooth filling.
  • Thaw puff pastry completely before use to ensure easy handling and proper puff.
  • You can substitute fresh strawberries with raspberries or blueberries for variation.
  • Use a sharp cookie cutter to achieve clean shapes when cutting the puff pastry.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature for the best texture and flavor.
