Classic Spritz Cookies are buttery, tender, and beautifully shaped cookies made using a cookie press. Flavored with almond extract and decorated with colorful sugar or sprinkles, these festive treats are perfect for holidays or any special occasion. They bake quickly to a delicate golden brown and have a satisfying melt-in-your-mouth texture.

Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2¼ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter (at room temperature)
  • ⅔ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg (lightly beaten)
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract

For Decoration

  • Colored sugar or sprinkles (for decorating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it's ready for baking your spritz cookies.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and sea salt until evenly combined.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: Using a stand mixer with the paddle attachment or an electric hand mixer, beat the unsalted butter until smooth and creamy. Add granulated sugar and the lightly beaten egg, mixing until the mixture is well combined and fluffy. Stir in the almond extract for flavor.
  4. Combine Dry and Wet: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet ingredients and mix on low speed until the dough just comes together without overmixing.
  5. Form Cookies: Using a cookie press, press the dough onto two large ungreased baking sheets. Make sure to leave at least 1 inch of space between each cookie. If the dough feels too soft and the shapes lose definition, chill it in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to firm up before pressing again.
  6. Decorate: Sprinkle colored sugar or your choice of sprinkles over the shaped cookies for a festive, decorative touch.
  7. Bake Cookies: Bake one baking sheet at a time in the preheated oven for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are lightly golden brown.
  8. Cool: Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for 2 minutes after baking, then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. This helps maintain their delicate texture.

Notes

  • If the dough is too soft for the cookie press, chilling it will help firm it up for better shapes.
  • For a different flavor profile, try substituting vanilla extract for almond extract.
  • Make sure to not overbake; the cookies should be just lightly golden at the edges to keep them tender.
  • Store cookies in an airtight container to maintain freshness for up to one week.
