Slow Cooker Swiss Steak is a comforting and hearty dish featuring tender round steak cooked slowly with potatoes, carrots, onions, and a rich tomato-based sauce. This easy-to-make recipe uses a slow cooker to meld flavors and create a delicious, fall-apart texture perfect for a family meal.

Ingredients

Meat and Vegetables

  • 2 pounds round steak
  • 1 pound petite Yukon gold potatoes, washed and quartered
  • 3 carrots, peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 medium yellow onion, chopped

Seasonings and Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 teaspoons garlic, minced
  • 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
  • 1 (14.5 ounce) can diced tomatoes
  • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
  • ⅓ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ⅓ cup cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Prepare Vegetables and Meat: Place the carrots, onions, and quartered potatoes at the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker to create a bed for the meat.
  2. Add the Steak: Lay the round steaks directly on top of the arranged vegetables inside the slow cooker.
  3. Mix Sauce Ingredients: In a medium bowl, combine salt, minced garlic, dry onion soup mix, diced tomatoes, low-sodium beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and cornstarch. Stir well until thoroughly mixed.
  4. Pour Sauce Over Meat and Vegetables: Evenly pour the sauce mixture over the steaks and vegetables ensuring everything is covered.
  5. Cook Slowly: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low heat for 6-7 hours or alternatively, cook on high for 2-3 hours until the meat is tender and vegetables are cooked through.
  6. Serve: Serve the Swiss steak hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles for a complete meal.

Notes

  • For best flavor, cook on low for the full 6-7 hours to allow the meat to become tender.
  • If thicker sauce is desired, remove the lid during the last 30 minutes of cooking to allow excess liquid to evaporate.
  • You can substitute round steak with sirloin tip or chuck steak for variation.
  • Use low-sodium broth to control salt content if necessary.
