Ingredients

Chicken

  • 3 pounds chicken drumsticks

Seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons BBQ spice rub

Sauces and Cooking Aids

  • 2 1/2 cups BBQ sauce (divided use)
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare slow cooker: Coat the inside of a slow cooker with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Season chicken: Rub the BBQ spice all over the chicken drumsticks until evenly coated, then place the drumsticks in the slow cooker in layers.
  3. Add sauce: Pour 2 cups of the BBQ sauce into the slow cooker over the drumsticks and gently toss to coat them well in the sauce.
  4. Cook chicken: Cover and cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
  5. Preheat broiler: When cooking is done, preheat your oven broiler to prepare for crisping.
  6. Broil chicken: Remove the drumsticks from the slow cooker and arrange them in a single layer on a sheet pan coated with cooking spray. Brush the remaining 1/2 cup of BBQ sauce over the drumsticks.
  7. Finish under broiler: Broil the drumsticks for 3-5 minutes or until the edges begin to brown and crisp, then remove and serve immediately.

  • Broiling at the end adds a deliciously crispy caramelized finish to the drumsticks.
  • Feel free to customize the BBQ spice rub to suit your preferred flavor profile.
  • Ensure drumsticks are fully cooked by checking that internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C).
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
