Ingredients

Chicken and Coating

  • 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1 inch pieces
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • Oil for frying (about 3 inches deep)

Sauce

  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon minced fresh garlic
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce (reduced sodium if possible)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch

Garnish

  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 2 tablespoons sliced green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare Egg Mixture: Place the eggs, salt, and pepper in a bowl and stir to combine thoroughly.
  2. Mix Coating: In a shallow bowl or plate, mix together the all purpose flour and 1/2 cup cornstarch evenly.
  3. Coat Chicken: Dip each piece of chicken first into the egg mixture, then coat with the flour and cornstarch mixture. Repeat until all chicken pieces are coated.
  4. Heat Oil: Heat about 3 inches of oil in a deep pan or fryer to 350°F (175°C), ensuring it reaches the right temperature for frying.
  5. Fry Chicken: Carefully add 7-8 chicken pieces at a time into the hot oil. Fry for approximately 5 minutes until the chicken is crispy and golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels. Repeat with remaining chicken.
  6. Prepare Sauce Mixture: While the chicken is frying, in a bowl combine honey, soy sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, rice vinegar, toasted sesame oil, and 2 teaspoons cornstarch. Mix well to combine.
  7. Cook Sauce: In a large pan, heat 1 teaspoon vegetable oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant. Pour in the sauce mixture, bring to a simmer, and cook for 3-4 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  8. Coat Chicken with Sauce: Add the fried chicken pieces to the pan with the sauce. Toss well to coat all pieces evenly with the glossy sauce.
  9. Garnish and Serve: Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions over the coated chicken. Serve immediately for best texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays around 350°F for optimal frying and crispiness.
  • For a lower sodium version, use reduced sodium soy sauce.
  • To keep chicken extra crispy, fry in small batches and drain well on paper towels.
  • You can double or halve the sauce ingredients depending on desired coating thickness.
  • Serve over steamed rice or with stir-fried vegetables for a complete meal.
