Sausage Gravy Puff Pie is a comforting and hearty dish featuring savory sausage gravy encased in flaky puff pastry. Perfect for a satisfying meal, this recipe combines browned sausage cooked into a creamy, seasoned gravy, all baked within a golden, buttery crust.

Ingredients

Sausage Gravy

  • 1 lb sausage
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Puff Pastry

  • 1 package of puff pastry, thawed

Instructions

  1. Cook sausage and prepare gravy: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausage until browned, breaking it into smaller pieces as it cooks. Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir it in, cooking for about 2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste. Gradually pour in the milk while stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Increase the heat to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce to a simmer and cook until the gravy thickens, about 5 minutes. Season with salt, black pepper, ground sage, and optional crushed red pepper flakes.
  2. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking the pie.
  3. Prepare the puff pastry: Roll out one sheet of thawed puff pastry and line the bottom of a 9-inch pie dish, allowing some overhang. Pour the prepared sausage gravy evenly into the pastry-lined dish. Roll out the second puff pastry sheet and place it on top of the gravy. Trim any excess pastry and crimp the edges to seal the pie. Cut a few small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking.
  4. Bake the pie: Place the pie on the middle rack of the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until the pastry crust is golden brown and flaky.
  5. Cool and serve: Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before slicing. Serve warm to enjoy the rich, hearty layers of sausage gravy and flaky pastry.

Notes

  • Make sure to thaw the puff pastry completely before use to prevent cracking.
  • Adjust seasoning to taste, especially if you prefer a spicier gravy by adding more crushed red pepper flakes.
  • The pie can be served with a simple green salad for a complete meal.
  • Leftover pie can be refrigerated and reheated in the oven for best texture.
