These Orange Rolls are a delightful twist on classic cinnamon rolls, infused with fresh orange zest and a sweet orange glaze. Soft, fluffy, and bursting with citrus flavor, they make a perfect breakfast treat or dessert, ideal for sharing or special occasions.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 1 3/4 cups warm water
  • 2 Tablespoons active dry yeast
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), melted
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour

Filling

  • 1/2 cup butter (1 stick), softened
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • Zest of 2 large oranges

Glaze

  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest (from fresh orange)
  • 2 Tablespoons freshly squeezed orange juice

Instructions

  1. Make dough: In a small bowl, combine warm water, active dry yeast, and granulated sugar. Let it rest for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy on top, indicating the yeast is activated. In a large mixing bowl fitted with a dough hook, add the eggs, melted butter, salt, all-purpose flour, and the yeast mixture.
  2. First kneading and rest: Knead the dough using your mixer on medium speed for 3 minutes. Cover the bowl with a towel and let the dough rest for 10 minutes to allow gluten to develop.
  3. Second kneading and rest: Knead the dough again for another 3 minutes, then let it rest for an additional 10 minutes to continue relaxing the dough.
  4. Third kneading and rest: Knead the dough one more time for 3 minutes and then let it rest again for 10 minutes, ensuring a smooth and elastic dough.
  5. Shape dough: Divide the dough into 3 equal balls. Lightly flour your countertop and roll each ball out into a 15-inch by 8-inch rectangle.
  6. Prepare filling: In a small bowl, mix the softened butter, granulated sugar, and zest of 2 large oranges until well combined. Spread this filling evenly over each rectangle of rolled-out dough.
  7. Roll and cut: Roll up each rectangle lengthwise to form a long tube, similar to how you would roll cinnamon rolls. Use a sharp serrated knife to cut the tubes into 1 1/2-inch sections.
  8. Arrange in pan: Place each small dough round into a greased muffin tin. Alternatively, you can use a greased baking dish as you would for cinnamon rolls, but muffin tins help keep them perfectly shaped.
  9. Final rising and baking: Lightly cover the dough with greased plastic wrap and allow it to rise for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 400°F (204°C) and bake the rolls for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from the oven when done.
  10. Prepare and apply glaze: Whisk together powdered sugar, orange zest, and freshly squeezed orange juice until smooth to make the glaze. Drizzle the glaze generously over the warm orange rolls.
  11. Serve and store: Orange rolls are best enjoyed fresh the day they are made. Store any leftovers in an airtight container for 1-3 days or freeze for longer storage.

Notes

  • Make sure the water is warm, not hot, to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Using fresh orange zest and juice provides the best citrus flavor.
  • If you prefer softer rolls, you can cover the baking pan with aluminum foil halfway through baking to prevent excessive browning.
  • These rolls can be reheated briefly in the microwave or oven to restore softness.
  • For an extra orange kick, add a tablespoon of orange extract to the dough or glaze.
