This Old Fashioned Easy Apple Crisp is a classic, comforting dessert featuring tender, spiced apples with a crunchy oat and brown sugar topping. Perfectly baked to golden brown perfection, it’s an easy-to-make treat that’s delicious served warm, especially when paired with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Ingredients

Apples

  • 6 golden delicious apples, peeled and chopped (other apple varieties can be used, can also be sliced)
  • 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 tsp lemon juice

Topping

  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup old fashioned oats (quick oats can be used, but it may result in a slightly different texture)
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • pinch of kosher salt
  • 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, diced into small cubes

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Butter an 8x8 inch baking dish or spray it with non-stick cooking spray, then set it aside for later use.
  2. Prepare Spiced Apples: In a mixing bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, 3/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and lemon juice. Stir well to evenly coat the apples with the spices and sugar. Transfer this mixture to the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  3. Make the Topping: In a separate bowl, mix together the light brown sugar, oats, all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and a pinch of kosher salt. Add the cold, diced butter to the mixture.
  4. Cut in Butter: Using a pastry cutter, two forks, or your hands, cut the butter into the oat mixture using a slight downward twisting motion. Continue until the mixture resembles pea-sized crumbs.
  5. Assemble and Bake: Evenly spread the crumb topping over the apples in the baking dish. Gently pat it down for an even layer. Place the dish in the oven and bake for 40-50 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly.
  6. Serve: Remove from the oven and serve warm. For extra indulgence, top with vanilla bean ice cream or whipped cream and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can use other apple varieties such as Granny Smith or Fuji depending on your taste preference.
  • Quick oats can substitute old fashioned oats but may produce a slightly different topping texture.
  • Make sure the butter is cold before cutting it into the dry ingredients to ensure a crumbly texture.
  • If desired, add chopped nuts such as walnuts or pecans to the topping for added crunch.
  • This dessert is best served immediately warm but can be reheated gently before serving.
