This Gluten Free Mixed Berry Crisp is a delightful and wholesome dessert featuring a vibrant medley of fresh or frozen berries topped with a crunchy, buttery oat and almond crumble. Naturally sweetened with honey or maple syrup and enhanced with citrus zest, this crisp bakes to golden perfection, making it the perfect warm treat to enjoy with vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

Filling

  • 2 pounds (32 ounces, about 5 cups) mixed berries, fresh or frozen
  • ⅓ cup honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons arrowroot starch or 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon orange or lemon zest (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 2 tablespoons orange or lemon juice

Crisp Topping

  • 1 cup old-fashioned oats
  • ½ cup packed almond flour or almond meal
  • ½ cup sliced almonds or chopped pistachios or pecans (optional)
  • ⅓ cup packed coconut sugar or brown sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon fine salt
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 3 tablespoons plain yogurt (Greek or regular), or additional melted butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Berries: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Rinse the berries and drain well, removing any stems. Slice strawberries into ¼-inch thick pieces and halve large blackberries for even cooking.
  2. Mix the Filling: In a 9x9-inch baking dish, combine the prepared berries with honey or maple syrup, arrowroot starch or cornstarch, citrus zest, and citrus juice. Toss gently to coat the berries evenly.
  3. Prepare the Crisp Topping: In a medium bowl, stir together oats, almond flour or meal, optional nuts, coconut or brown sugar, and salt. Add the melted butter and yogurt, mixing until everything is well incorporated and the mixture is moistened.
  4. Assemble the Crisp: Spoon dollops of the oat mixture evenly over the berry filling. Use your fingers to loosely break up and spread the topping without packing it down.
  5. Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 50 minutes until the filling is bubbling around the edges and the topping is lightly golden brown.
  6. Rest and Serve: Let the crisp rest for 5 to 10 minutes to thicken up before serving. Enjoy warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect finishing touch.

Notes

  • You can use fresh or frozen mixed berries depending on the season.
  • Adjust the amount of citrus zest based on your preference for citrus flavor.
  • Optional nuts add a nice crunch, but you can omit them for nut-free variations.
  • Use arrowroot starch for a gluten-free thickener or cornstarch if preferred.
  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or plain yogurt for extra creaminess.
