This Homemade Tomato and Basil Spaghetti Sauce is a simple, fresh, and flavorful recipe perfect for pasta lovers. Made with high-quality canned tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, and oregano, it delivers a smooth or chunky texture depending on your preference. Ready in just 20 minutes, this sauce is ideal for quick weeknight dinners or meal prepping in advance.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
  • 6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup (25g) fresh basil leaves, chopped
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 3 x 14oz (400g) cans chopped tomatoes (good quality)
  • 1/2 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare Tomatoes: Process canned chopped tomatoes in a food processor for a smoother texture, or alternatively, use crushed tomatoes or passata. You may skip this step if you prefer a chunky spaghetti sauce.
  2. Sauté Garlic and Basil: In a large pot, heat the olive oil over low heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped basil, stirring quickly for no more than 10-20 seconds to avoid burning, which can make the sauce bitter.
  3. Simmer Sauce: Add the processed tomatoes, dried oregano, and salt to the pot. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it gently simmer over very low heat for 7-10 minutes to develop flavors.
  4. Cool and Store: Once cooked, allow the sauce to cool. Transfer it to a clean jar for immediate use or divide into portions to freeze for future meals.

Notes

  • Use good quality canned tomatoes for the best flavor.
  • Do not overcook the garlic and basil to prevent bitterness.
  • The sauce can be made smoother or chunkier depending on your preference.
  • Store leftover sauce in the refrigerator for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Great as a base for other pasta dishes or as a dipping sauce.
