This Homemade Flatbreads recipe is a super easy and quick way to make soft, flavorful flatbreads using simple ingredients like natural yogurt, self-raising flour, and baking powder. Ready in just 30 minutes, these breads are perfect for serving alongside curries, dips, or enjoying as a snack. The flatbreads are cooked on a stovetop griddle or frying pan until golden and brushed with melted butter for extra richness.

Ingredients

Flatbread Dough

  • 450 g Natural yogurt
  • 450 g Self-raising flour
  • 1 tsp Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Fine sea salt
  • Extra flour for rolling

Finishing

  • 30 g Butter (for brushing over at the end, melted)

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: Mix the natural yogurt, self-raising flour, baking powder, and fine sea salt together in a bowl until the mixture forms a sticky dough ball.
  2. Knead Dough: Dust your work surface with extra flour and tip the dough onto it. Knead the dough for one to two minutes until it comes together smoothly and is no longer sticky.
  3. Divide Dough: Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces by halving it three times.
  4. Roll Out: Using plenty of extra flour to prevent sticking, roll each dough ball into a flat, round shape with a well-floured rolling pin. To optimize cooking time, roll the next flatbread while cooking others.
  5. Cook Flatbreads: Heat a griddle pan or heavy frying pan over medium-high heat until hot. Cook each flatbread for about 3 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through. Keep cooked flatbreads warm in a low oven if desired.
  6. Finish with Butter: Brush each cooked flatbread with melted butter for a rich, flavorful finish.

Notes

  • Use self-raising flour for quick leavening; if unavailable, substitute plain flour with additional baking powder.
  • Cook flatbreads one or two at a time depending on pan size to ensure even cooking.
  • Keep cooked flatbreads warm in a low oven (around 90-100°C / 200°F) until all are finished.
  • Optional: add herbs or garlic to the dough for extra flavor variations.
