These soft and buttery dinner rolls are perfect for any meal, featuring a tender crumb and golden crust. Made with a simple yeast dough, they are enriched with eggs and butter, then brushed with melted butter for a delicious finish. Ideal for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Yeast Mixture

  • 1 tablespoon rapid rise yeast
  • ½ teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)

Dough

  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 cup warm milk (110-115 degrees F)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4½ to 5 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

For Brushing

  • Salted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Activate Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the rapid rise yeast, ½ teaspoon sugar, and warm water. Let it stand until bubbly, indicating the yeast is active.
  2. Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, stir together the warm milk, vegetable oil, ½ cup sugar, and salt using a wooden spoon until well combined.
  3. Combine Initial Ingredients: Add 1 cup of flour to the wet mixture and mix thoroughly. Then add the eggs and mix vigorously until the batter is smooth. Incorporate the yeast mixture and continue mixing until smooth.
  4. Add Remaining Flour: Gradually add the remaining flour, about 1 cup at a time, stirring continuously with a wooden spoon until the dough comes together. The dough should be soft and slightly sticky.
  5. First Rise: Transfer the dough to a large bowl, cover it with a tea towel, and allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled in size, approximately 1 hour.
  6. Shape Dough: After the dough has doubled, punch it down and divide it in half. On a floured surface, roll each half into a 12-inch circle about ⅜ inch thick.
  7. Butter and Cut: Brush both dough circles with melted unsalted butter. Using a pizza cutter, slice each circle into 12 equal wedges like a pizza. Roll each wedge from the rounded edge toward the point, forming crescent-shaped rolls.
  8. Arrange on Pan: Place the rolls on a greased 11x16-inch metal baking sheet with the pointed ends down, arranging them in 3 rows across and 8 rows down.
  9. Second Rise: Cover the rolls with a tea towel and let them rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
  10. Preheat Oven: Just before baking, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit.
  11. Bake: Bake the rolls for 16-20 minutes until lightly browned. Test doneness by pressing the rolls lightly; they should bounce back. If not, bake a few minutes longer.
  12. Finish and Serve: Brush the warm rolls with melted salted butter and serve them warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure liquids are warm (110-115°F) to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
  • Do not add too much flour; the dough should be slightly sticky to keep rolls soft.
  • For richer flavor, you can substitute vegetable oil with melted butter in the dough.
  • Leftover rolls can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days or frozen for longer storage.
  • Brush rolls with additional melted butter after baking for extra softness and shine.
