This grilled pizza recipe offers a delicious alternative to traditional oven-baked pizza, delivering a crispy, smoky crust with perfectly melted cheese and your choice of toppings. Made with homemade or store-bought dough, the pizza is cooked directly on a preheated grill for a unique flavor and texture that is sure to impress.

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • Pizza dough (homemade or store-bought; recipe makes 2 large pizzas, can be halved)

For Cooking

  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil

Toppings

  • Pizza sauce (quantity as desired)
  • Cheese (mozzarella or preferred type, amount per taste)
  • Pepperoni, meats, vegetables, or other desired toppings

Instructions

  1. Prep the Grill: Ensure the grill is well cleaned and generously oiled to prevent the pizza crust from sticking. Preheat the grill to 425°F (medium-high heat) for even cooking and nice grill marks.
  2. Prepare the Dough: Divide the pizza dough into 5 to 8 portions depending on preferred pizza size and thickness. Stretch or roll out each portion on parchment paper to your desired thinness and diameter.
  3. Oil and Place Dough on Grill: Brush the top of each prepared dough portion with olive oil. Then, carefully lift the parchment paper with the dough and flip the dough onto the grill, so the oiled side is down. Peel off the parchment paper once the dough is on the grill.
  4. Grill the First Side: Cover the grill and cook the dough for 2 to 3 minutes. Using tongs, check if the bottom side has developed grill marks and turned golden brown, indicating it's ready to flip.
  5. Add Toppings and Grill Second Side: Flip the grilled crust onto a plate or pizza peel with the cooked side up. Add pizza sauce, cheese, and your choice of toppings. Then reduce the grill heat slightly and slide the pizza back onto the grill. Cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes until the cheese melts and the bottom crust is golden brown and cooked through.

Notes

  • Makes 5-8 small to medium pizzas depending on portion size.
  • Use parchment paper to easily transfer dough onto the grill.
  • Pre-oiling the grill grate and dough helps prevent sticking.
  • Adjust grill temperature as needed to avoid burning toppings.
  • Customize toppings to your preference for meat, vegetables, or cheeses.
