This recipe for Grilled BBQ Chicken Breasts delivers juicy, tender, and flavorful chicken using simple ingredients and straightforward grilling techniques. The chicken breasts are tenderized to an even thickness, seasoned with a smoky-spiced rub, and basted with tangy BBQ sauce for a deliciously caramelized finish. Perfect for a quick, healthy, and satisfying meal.

Ingredients

Chicken

  • 2 large boneless skinless chicken breasts (about 2 lbs)

Seasoning

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp sea salt
  • ½ tsp freshly cracked black pepper
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp brown sugar

Sauce

  • ¼ cup BBQ sauce

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Grill: Preheat your grill to a high temperature of 450°F to ensure a good sear and grill marks on the chicken breasts.
  2. Tenderize the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts into a heavy-duty plastic bag and gently pound with a meat mallet or rolling pin to an even thickness of ½ to ¾ inch to promote even cooking.
  3. Season the Chicken: Rub olive oil evenly over both sides of the chicken breasts. Then, apply sea salt, freshly cracked black pepper, brown sugar, and smoked paprika well over the entire surface. Allow the chicken to come to room temperature to ensure even cooking on the grill.
  4. Grill the Chicken: Place the chicken breasts onto the preheated grill. Grill for 6 minutes on the first side without moving so they easily release from the grates.
  5. Flip and Baste: After 6 minutes, flip the chicken breasts and immediately baste with BBQ sauce. Continue grilling for 6 minutes more.
  6. Baste and Finish Cooking: Baste the grilled side with BBQ sauce again and grill an additional 2 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 155-160°F.
  7. Rest the Chicken: Remove the chicken from the grill and cover loosely with aluminum foil. Let rest for 5 minutes; this allows juices to redistribute and the internal temperature to rise to the safe temperature of 165°F.

Notes

  • Flattening the chicken breasts ensures they cook evenly and prevents dryness.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the chicken is safely cooked without overcooking.
  • Resting the chicken after grilling helps maintain juiciness.
  • Adjust grilling times based on breast thickness and grill temperature variations.
  • For extra smoky flavor, add wood chips to the grill.
