A delicious and sophisticated twist on the classic grilled cheese sandwich featuring creamy goat cheese, sweet pear slices, and fresh arugula, all grilled to golden perfection on crusty whole grain bread with a drizzle of honey for a touch of natural sweetness.

Ingredients

Sandwich Ingredients

  • 1 handful fresh arugula or spinach
  • 1 oz goat cheese
  • 2 slices crusty whole grain bread
  • ⅓ pear (Bosc or Bartlett), sliced
  • Drizzle of honey
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Olive oil cooking spray

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice your baguette or crusty whole grain bread into 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick slices. If not using all slices immediately, freeze extras for later; they reheat well in an oven or toaster oven.
  2. Assemble the Sandwich Base: On one bread slice, evenly spread the goat cheese. Layer the sliced pears on top of the cheese, then drizzle honey over the pears to add a subtle sweetness that complements the tangy goat cheese.
  3. Add Greens and Season: Place a handful of fresh arugula or spinach over the pear slices. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to enhance all the flavors.
  4. Complete and Grill the Sandwich: Place the second slice of bread on top to close the sandwich. Lightly spray a grill pan or panini press with olive oil cooking spray. Grill the sandwich in a panini press for about 3-5 minutes or on a grill pan until the bread is crispy and golden brown, and the cheese is soft and melted. Adjust the time slightly longer if using a grill pan to ensure even toasting.

Notes

  • You can substitute spinach for arugula according to your preference.
  • Bosc or Bartlett pears are ideal for their sweet and slightly crisp texture.
  • Use a panini press for faster and more even grilling; a grill pan works well too but requires a bit more attention.
  • To add an extra layer of flavor, consider a thin spread of Dijon mustard under the goat cheese.
  • This sandwich is best enjoyed immediately for optimal texture and flavor.
