Creamy and flavorful Garlic Mashed Potatoes made with red potatoes, butter, sour cream, and a blend of fresh and powdered garlic. This easy recipe offers two cooking methods—stovetop or Instant Pot—perfect for a comforting side dish any day of the week.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 3 pounds red potatoes (peeled if desired)

Mix-ins

  • 4 tablespoons butter
  • 8 ounces sour cream
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic

Seasonings

  • 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder (to taste)
  • 1-2 teaspoons salt (to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper (or 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper)

Instructions

  1. Cook the Potatoes: Choose your preferred method: stovetop or Instant Pot. For stovetop, quarter the potatoes and cover with water in a large pot; bring to a boil, then simmer on medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes until tender. For Instant Pot, place a metal rack inside the pressure cooker, add 1 cup water, place potatoes on the rack, seal the lid, and pressure cook for 8 minutes, then quick release.
  2. Drain and Transfer: Once cooked, drain the water thoroughly and transfer the hot potatoes to a large mixing bowl.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Add butter, whole milk, sour cream, minced garlic, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper to the warm potatoes.
  4. Mash the Potatoes: Use a potato masher or a hand mixer to blend the mixture just until combined. Keep some small lumps for texture; avoid over-mixing to prevent a gluey consistency.
  5. Adjust Seasoning: Taste the mashed potatoes and add more salt or pepper if needed according to your preference.
  6. Serve: Serve warm as a delicious side dish and enjoy the creamy garlic flavor.

Notes

  • You can peel the red potatoes if you prefer a smoother texture, but leaving the skins on adds nutrients and texture.
  • Using a hand mixer is recommended for a fluffier mash without overworking the potatoes.
  • Adjust garlic powder and salt to taste depending on your preference.
  • The potatoes should be mashed while hot for best blending of ingredients.
