This classic garlic bread recipe features a crusty Italian or French loaf generously spread with a flavorful garlic butter mixture, baked to golden perfection, and topped with melted Parmesan cheese. Perfect as a side for pasta dishes or a delicious snack, this easy-to-make bread promises a crispy outside and a soft, aromatic inside.

Ingredients

Bread

  • 1 pound Italian or French loaf

Garlic Butter Mixture

  • 1/2 cup softened unsalted butter
  • 3 medium cloves garlic, grated or finely-minced
  • 1 tablespoon finely-chopped fresh parsley, plus extra for garnish
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried oregano
  • Flaky sea salt and coarsely-ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Prep oven, baking sheet and bread: Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and make cleanup easier. Slice the Italian or French loaf in half lengthwise so you have two long halves, and place them cut side up on the prepared baking sheet.
  2. Mix the garlic butter: In a small bowl, combine the softened unsalted butter with the grated garlic, finely chopped fresh parsley, and dried oregano. Stir thoroughly until the mixture is smooth and all ingredients are well incorporated.
  3. Spread garlic butter on bread: Evenly spread the garlic butter mixture over the cut sides of both halves of bread. Sprinkle flaky sea salt and coarsely-ground black pepper evenly over the buttered surface to enhance flavor.
  4. Bake initially: Place the baking sheet with the bread halves into the preheated oven. Bake for about 7 minutes until the edges of the bread just begin to turn a golden brown, indicating it has started to crisp up.
  5. Add Parmesan and continue baking: Remove the baking sheet briefly from the oven. Evenly sprinkle the freshly grated Parmesan cheese over the top of the garlic buttered bread halves. Return the baking sheet to the oven and bake for an additional 2 to 3 minutes until the cheese melts and turns lightly golden.
  6. Serve: Remove the garlic bread from the oven. Slice into desired serving pieces, sprinkle with extra fresh parsley for color and freshness, and serve immediately while warm for the best flavor experience.

Notes

  • Use fresh garlic for the best flavor; avoid pre-minced garlic to maintain a bright, robust taste.
  • Allow the butter to soften at room temperature to make mixing easier and ensure even spreading.
  • For a crispier texture, you can broil for the last 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  • Leftover garlic bread can be wrapped tightly and refrigerated; reheat in the oven for best texture.
  • Parmesan can be substituted with Pecorino Romano for a sharper flavor if preferred.
