This easy chocolate mousse recipe delivers a rich, airy, and creamy dessert in just 20 minutes. Made with high-quality chocolate and whipped cream, it’s perfect for satisfying chocolate cravings with minimal effort and elegant presentation. The mousse is smooth, decadent, and topped with a dollop of whipped cream and decorative chocolate curls or fresh berries, making it ideal for special occasions or simple indulgence.

Ingredients

Chocolate Mousse

  • 1 1/2 cups Heavy Cream (divided)
  • 6 ounces Chocolate (1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate)
  • 2 Tablespoons Powdered Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Bean Paste or Extract

Toppings

  • Chocolate Shavings or Chocolate Curls
  • Fresh Raspberries, Strawberries
  • Candied Nuts

Instructions

  1. Melt the Chocolate: In a microwave-safe bowl, heat half of the heavy cream (about 3/4 cup) for approximately 1 minute until hot. Stir in 1 cup (6 ounces) of chocolate chips until well combined, then let the mixture rest for 5 minutes to allow the chocolate to fully melt and blend smoothly with the cream.
  2. Cool the Mixture: Whisk the chocolate and cream mixture until smooth and silky. Set it aside to cool while preparing the remaining ingredients.
  3. Whip the Cream: Pour the remaining 3/4 cup of cold heavy cream into a medium-sized bowl. Using a hand mixer, stand mixer, or whisk, beat the cream until soft peaks form. Reserve 1/2 cup of this whipped cream by scooping it into a small bowl, cover it, and refrigerate it to use as a topping later. Continue whipping the remaining cream until stiff peaks form.
  4. Fold Everything Together: Gently fold the whipped cream into the cooled chocolate mixture in three batches using a large spatula. Incorporate the cream carefully to keep the mousse light and airy, even if small streaks of cream remain. Once combined, fold in the powdered sugar and vanilla bean paste or extract until evenly distributed.
  5. Chill and Serve: Divide the finished mousse evenly among four small ramekins or serving glasses. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours to set. When ready to serve, top each serving with the reserved whipped cream and garnish with chocolate shavings, curls, fresh raspberries, strawberries, or candied nuts for a beautiful and tasty presentation.

Notes

  • Use high-quality semisweet or bittersweet chocolate for best flavor.
  • Ensure the heavy cream is very cold before whipping for better volume.
  • Do not overmix the cream into the chocolate to maintain a light, fluffy texture.
  • Can be made a day ahead and stored covered in the refrigerator.
  • For dairy-free version, substitute heavy cream with coconut cream and use dairy-free chocolate.
