A rich and creamy buttermilk syrup perfect for drizzling over pancakes, waffles, or french toast. This syrup combines the tanginess of buttermilk with the sweetness of sugar and butter, enhanced by vanilla and a hint of corn syrup for a smooth texture.

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Combine Ingredients: In a large saucepan, stir together the granulated sugar, buttermilk, butter, and corn syrup until evenly mixed.
  2. Heat Mixture: Place the saucepan over medium heat and cook, stirring frequently to prevent burning, until the mixture comes to a boil.
  3. Boil and Stir: Once boiling, reduce to a simmer and continue cooking for 7 minutes while stirring constantly to ensure the syrup thickens evenly.
  4. Finish Syrup: Remove the saucepan from heat and immediately stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract. The mixture will foam rapidly, so use a large enough pan to contain the expansion. Stir until the foam subsides and the syrup is smooth.

Notes

  • Use a large saucepan to accommodate the foaming that occurs when baking soda is added.
  • Stir constantly during boiling to avoid burning the syrup.
  • This syrup is best served warm over breakfast favorites but can be stored in the refrigerator and gently reheated.
  • For a thicker syrup, allow it to cool slightly before serving.
