This traditional Butter Tea recipe combines the robust flavors of black tea with creamy half and half, rich butter, and a touch of salt to create a comforting and energizing beverage. Perfect for a cozy morning or afternoon pick-me-up, this recipe yields two servings and is quick to prepare.

Ingredients

Tea Ingredients

  • 2 bags black tea
  • 2 cups water

Add-ins

  • ¼ cup half and half
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Steep: Bring two cups of water to a boil over medium heat. Remove from heat and steep the two black tea bags for 5 minutes. Remove the tea bags, squeezing out any remaining liquid, then discard them.
  2. Mix: Add the half and half, butter, and salt to the brewed tea. Mix thoroughly until the butter is melted and all ingredients are well combined. Alternatively, divide the brewed tea between two cups, then add half of the half and half, butter, and salt to each cup and mix individually.
  3. Serve: Pour the prepared butter tea into two cups if not already divided, and serve immediately while warm for the best flavor and experience.

Notes

  • Use unsalted butter for better control over saltiness.
  • Adjust the amount of butter and salt according to taste preferences.
  • For a dairy-free version, substitute half and half and butter with plant-based alternatives such as coconut milk and vegan butter.
  • This tea is traditionally consumed hot and is a staple in Tibetan cuisine.
