This classic brownie recipe delivers rich, fudgy, and chocolaty brownies perfect for any occasion. Made with melted butter, a combination of brown and granulated sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and semisweet chocolate chips, these brownies bake to a moist and tender texture with a slightly crisp crust. Easy to prepare and bake in about 45 minutes, they are perfect for a quick homemade treat.

Ingredients

Wet Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick / 115g) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup (100g) dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Dry Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda

Add-Ins (Optional)

  • 1/2 cup (4 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips or chocolate chunks

Instructions

  1. Melt Butter and Mix Sugars: Place the unsalted butter in a large bowl and melt it using a microwave, double boiler, or stovetop pot. While the butter is still hot, add both the dark brown sugar and granulated sugar and whisk together until fully combined and smooth.
  2. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Incorporate the room temperature eggs and vanilla extract into the butter and sugar mixture. Whisk thoroughly until all ingredients are fully incorporated and smooth.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients and Fold in Add-Ins: Sift or add the all-purpose flour, unsweetened cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda into the wet ingredients. Gently fold the mixture together until no dry ingredients remain visible. If using, fold in the semisweet chocolate chips or chunks evenly throughout the batter.
  4. Prepare and Bake: Pour the brownie batter into a prepared baking dish, such as a greased or parchment-lined square pan. Place the baking dish in the center of a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the center comes out clean with a few moist crumbs attached.
  5. Cool and Serve: Let the brownies cool in the baking dish for 10 to 15 minutes to set. Then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, cut into squares and serve plain or with optional toppings like ice cream, melted chocolate, or chopped nuts.

Notes

  • For fudgier brownies, slightly underbake by checking a minute or two before the minimum baking time.
  • Room temperature eggs incorporate better and help prevent batter curdling.
  • Using a mix of brown and granulated sugar provides moisture and a slight caramel flavor.
  • You can substitute semisweet chocolate chips with any chocolate chunks or nuts for variety.
  • Allow brownies to cool fully to get clean cuts without crumbling.
