This Baked Brie recipe features a creamy brie cheese round wrapped in flaky puff pastry, optionally topped with cranberry sauce and chopped nuts, then baked to golden perfection. It's an elegant and easy appetizer perfect for gatherings or holiday celebrations, offering a delightful combination of warm, gooey cheese and crispy pastry.

Ingredients

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry (frozen or homemade)

Cheese

  • 1 8 oz brie cheese round (5 to 7 inches)

Toppings (Optional)

  • 1/4 cup cranberry sauce or any jam
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts

Egg Wash

  • 1 large egg (beaten)

Instructions

  1. Thaw Puff Pastry: If using store-bought puff pastry, thaw it according to package instructions by letting it sit at room temperature for 30 minutes to 1 hour or microwaving wrapped sheets for 15 seconds on each side until it can be easily unfolded.
  2. Preheat Oven: Preheat the oven to 400ºF (204ºC). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease a 9 or 10 inch baking dish.
  3. Roll Out Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a 12-inch square about 1/8-inch thick to ensure it covers the brie completely.
  4. Place Brie: Position the brie round in the center of the rolled-out pastry, ensuring enough pastry remains on all sides for wrapping.
  5. Add Toppings: Spread cranberry sauce or jam over the top of the brie. If using, sprinkle chopped nuts evenly on top for added texture and flavor.
  6. Wrap Brie: Fold the pastry over the brie, encasing it fully. Pinch the edges to seal and use the beaten egg to brush the seams to help the pastry stick.
  7. Score Pastry: With a knife, lightly score around the dough surface without cutting all the way through to create a decorative effect and help with even baking.
  8. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the entire wrapped brie generously with the beaten egg to achieve a golden, shiny crust once baked.
  9. Bake: Place the wrapped brie onto the prepared baking sheet or dish and bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, until the pastry is golden brown, crispy, and cooked through.
  10. Rest: Remove from the oven and let the baked brie cool for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing. This resting time allows the cheese to set slightly for easier serving.
  11. Serve: Slice and serve the baked brie warm with crackers, baguette slices, or apple slices for a delightful appetizer presentation.

Notes

  • Let the baked brie rest before cutting to avoid cheese oozing too much.
  • Use a sharp knife to slice the baked brie for clean servings.
  • Substitute cranberry sauce with other jams like apricot or fig for varied flavors.
  • For a more decadent version, wrap additional slices of prosciutto inside before wrapping the brie.
  • Homemade puff pastry can be used but requires additional preparation time.
