Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a comforting and hearty casserole featuring seasoned ground beef patties browned to perfection, then baked in a creamy mushroom gravy. This classic homestyle dish is simple to prepare and perfect for family dinners, served best with mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

Beef Mixture

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 1/2 cups saltine crackers, crumbled
  • 1 cup milk (for beef mixture)
  • 1 tsp Italian herbs
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Dash of cayenne pepper (optional)
  • Salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Coating and Gravy

  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup (10.5 ounces)
  • 1 cup milk (for gravy)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the Beef Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, crumbled saltine crackers, 1 cup milk, Italian herbs, onion powder, garlic powder, cayenne pepper if using, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is evenly combined.
  3. Form the Steaks: Shape the beef mixture into eight evenly sized, roughly 1/2-inch-thick patties.
  4. Coat in Flour: Lightly dust each patty with all-purpose flour, shaking off any excess.
  5. Brown the Steaks: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat with a little oil if needed. Brown the patties for 2-3 minutes on each side until a golden crust forms.
  6. Arrange in Baking Dish: Transfer the browned patties to the prepared baking dish in a single layer.
  7. Prepare the Gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and the remaining cup of milk until smooth. Pour this mixture evenly over the steaks in the baking dish.
  8. Bake: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes, until the gravy is bubbly and the steaks are fully cooked through.
  9. Rest and Serve: Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy the hamburger steaks hot, ideally with mashed potatoes or rice.

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce excess grease.
  • The cayenne pepper is optional but adds a slight kick to the flavor.
  • Tapping off excess flour helps prevent a clumpy coating on the patties.
  • You can substitute the cream of mushroom soup with cream of celery or cream of chicken soup for variations.
  • Letting the dish rest before serving helps the gravy thicken slightly for better texture.
