How This All Started
I learned to cook out of pure necessity, and honestly? A little bit of desperation.
Fresh out of college, newly married, and completely broke, my husband and I were living in a cramped studio apartment surviving on ramen and questionable pasta dishes. One night, after yet another bowl of instant noodles, he looked at me and said, "There has to be a better way to eat that doesn't drain our bank account."
Challenge accepted.
I started with the most basic thing I could think of: roast chicken. I called my aunt (the only person I knew who actually cooked), scribbled down instructions on a grocery receipt, and gave it a shot. The skin was rubbery, the inside was dry, and we ate it anyway because we'd spent money on it. But you know what? We made that together, and it felt like an accomplishment.
The next week, I tried again. Then again. I started checking out cookbooks, watching cooking videos during my lunch breaks, texting my aunt with panicked questions like "how do I know if chicken is done??" and "can I substitute literally anything for white wine?"
Slowly, things started tasting... good. Then really good. Our tiny kitchen became my favorite place to be.
Then Everything Changed
A few years later, we had our first baby. Suddenly, cooking wasn't just about feeding ourselves anymore—it was about nourishing this tiny human we'd created. The stakes felt higher. The joy felt deeper.
I remember the first time my daughter ate solid food. I'd made this simple butternut squash puree, nothing fancy, and she grabbed the spoon and shoved it in her mouth with this look of pure delight. My husband laughed and said, "She's definitely your kid."
As she grew, the kitchen became where we connected. She'd sit on the counter (yes, I know, not the safest) and "help" me stir things, add ingredients, taste-test. Some of my favorite memories aren't from fancy restaurants or elaborate celebrations—they're from regular Tuesday nights making spaghetti together, flour in her hair, sauce on her shirt, both of us laughing.
That's when I realized: cooking isn't just about the food. It's about the moments you create while making it.
Why Dish Cooks Exists
I started this blog because I wanted to share what I've learned with other people navigating the beautiful chaos of everyday life. People who want to feed their families well but don't have hours to spend in the kitchen. Parents juggling work and kids and everything else. Anyone who believes that good food doesn't have to be complicated.
